Introduction
The National Association of Health and
Safety was commissioned to inspect the mattress company, Damoar Private Ltd.
due to reports of rat infestations from its customers. The company launched a
new mattress named Airspring, on 20th December, 2022. Since its
launch to 10th January, 2023, the company sold 5,000 Airspring
mattresses across India. 500 customers filed complaints with the association stating
the mattress was causing rat infestations in their residence. The association
sent Team 3 to the manufacturing centre of Damoar to inspect the manufacturing
process of the mattress. The team also reached out to the customers for reviews
about the Airspring Mattress. This operation was headed directly by the
Chairman of the association due to the high quantity of complaints.
Findings
As a result of the
field visit to the centre of manufacturing of Damoar, it was found that one of
the materials used in the sponge/foam inside the mattress was processed dried cherries.
Airspring was introduced as a mattress made from organic and recyclable
materials which always smelled pleasant. The cherries were added to accomplish
the pleasant smell. Since cherries have a high content of lactic acid, whose
smell attracts rats, this resulted in a rat infestation in customer’s
residence.
